Data Shop Talk is No More

Unfortunately, Petro.ai has decommissioned the Data Shop Talk blog. DST housed a significant portion of my published work. I don’t know if or when I’ll get this content back up online. Spotfire isn’t my primary role anymore, so it’s a lower priority.

  1. I had a query with reagrds to the line graph with cumulative y-axis. I want the graph to stop at the last available value. For instance I have values until 2022 Jan from 2021 Jan. I am trying to plot a actual vs forecast graph. Forecast values are availabe until the end of 2022 but the actual is only until 2021 Jan. I want the line for Actual to stop at 2022 Jan, but instead it gets extended until dec 2022.

  2. Julie, nice blog very interesting information you have published. Out of curiosity, what are the most common uses you have for Alteryx at an oil and gas company? Our work is primarily A&D/BD focused, specifically on the reservoir engineering and finance side. Thank you.

    1. Every single one of our business units uses Alteryx in some way. We have source system databases that are incorporated into a data virtualization tool called Denodo. From Denodo the data is made available to users, but often times it still needs some type of data wrangling to make it useful. Our IT organization does some of this work but as I am sure you know there are never enough IT people to meet demand. Therefore, self-service is a very important part of getting data to users. We have applications like PowerBI and Spotfire to visualize the data, but those applications aren’t great for processing data. Instead, our self-service users and our analytics team use Alteryx. It’s low/no code and works great for this purpose regardless of which function you’re talking about. We use it for drilling, completions, supply chain, finance, accounting, land….the whole kit and kaboodle.

  3. I’ve really appreciated your blogs/videos on Youtube! I was curious to know if you’ve had any experience with wellbore diagrams? Do you know if Spotfire has potential to allow a user to select a well and display a diagram that correlates to that well?

    1. Wellbore diagrams might be possible with mods, and you might be able to find a vendor like Petro.ai that has a product for wellbore diagrams. I haven’t worked with Spotfire in a while, and so I haven’t developed with mods.
